Why is the moon shaped like a banana?

The moon is really a round ball. It looks like a banana when the sun lights only a thin side of it that we can see. The rest is dark, so it blends into the night sky. It is like seeing just the edge of a cookie in a dark room. As nights pass, more of the bright part shows.

The moon is always round, but it does not make its own light. Sunlight shines on half of it. As the moon moves around Earth, we see different amounts of that bright half. When we see only a thin curved part, it is called a crescent, and it can look like a banana. Fun fact: the moon always keeps the same side facing Earth, so we never see its far side from the ground.
