How do rockets fly?

Rockets fly because hot gas pushes down. Then the rocket zooms up. It roars very loudly. Fire shines under it.

Rockets fly by pushing very hot gas out of their bottom very fast. When the gas shoots down, it pushes the rocket up. It is like letting go of a blown-up balloon. Air rushes out one way, and the balloon zips the other way. A rocket carries its own fuel, so it can keep pushing even high in the sky.

Rockets fly using thrust, a strong push made by burning fuel. The fuel burns inside the engine and makes very hot gas. The gas blasts out of the nozzle, the narrow opening at the bottom. When the gas pushes one way, the rocket is pushed the other way, up into the sky. Fun fact: rockets can fly in space because they carry their own oxygen to burn fuel, so they do not need air around them.
