Why is the sky blue?

The sky is blue because sunlight hits air. Blue shines scatter everywhere. Your eyes see blue above. At sunset, red can show too.

Sunlight looks white, but it holds many colors. When it goes through the air, the blue part gets bounced around the most, so blue comes to your eyes from all over the sky. It is a bit like shaking a box of tiny blue beads and seeing blue specks everywhere.

Sunlight is made of many colors mixed together. Air is full of tiny bits called molecules, which are pieces too small to see. When sunlight hits them, shorter blue waves scatter, or spread out, more than most other colors. That blue light comes to your eyes from every direction, making the sky look blue. Fun fact: violet scatters even more than blue, but our eyes notice blue better, and some violet gets soaked up high in the air.
