What is the Milky Way?

The Milky Way is a big, beautiful spiral of stars and gas that stretches across the night sky. It looks like a bright, white cloud of light, and it's the home of our Solar System. The stars in the Milky Way are so far away from us that it takes light from them millions of years to reach us. That means when we look at the Milky Way, we're seeing stars that existed millions of years ago!
