Where do babies come from?

Babies come from a grown-up’s body. The belly gets big because a baby grows inside. When ready, the baby comes out. Helpers keep everyone safe.

Babies start when two tiny starter parts from grown-ups join. Then the baby grows in a special warm place inside a grown-up’s body, and the belly gets bigger. It is a little like a plant starting from a tiny bit and growing bigger until it is ready to come out.

A baby begins when a sperm, a tiny cell from one body, joins an egg, a tiny cell in another body. Together they make the first cell of a baby. The baby grows in the uterus, a soft, stretchy place inside the body. After about nine months, the baby is born through the vagina or by a doctor making a safe opening in the belly. Fun fact: babies can hear sounds before they are born.
