How does a digger work?

A digger scoops dirt because its arm moves. The big bucket bites the ground. Wheels or tracks help it roll. The driver pulls sticks inside.

A digger works like a big, strong arm. The driver pushes little handles. That makes the arm move, the scoop go down, and dirt lift up. Then the digger turns and drops the dirt in a new place. It is a bit like using a spoon to scoop cereal from a bowl, but much bigger and stronger.

A digger, or excavator, uses an engine to make strong parts move. The driver uses levers to control the boom, the big arm, and the bucket, the scoop at the end. Fluid is pushed through thick tubes to move metal rods called pistons, which lift, bend, and dig. Tracks help it stay steady on mud. Fun fact: some diggers can spin all the way around without moving their tracks.
