Where does our trash go?

Trash goes in a big truck. It goes away because it is yucky. Some gets buried in a big hole. Some gets made into new things.

After we put trash in the bin, a big truck takes it away. Some trash goes to a dump called a landfill. It is a big hole where trash is covered with dirt. Some things, like cans and paper, can go to a place that makes them into new things. It is like sorting toys into the right boxes, so each thing goes where it belongs.

When the trash truck comes, it takes bags to different places. Most everyday trash goes to a landfill, a huge lined pit where trash is packed down and covered with soil so it does not blow around. Recycling goes to a sorting center, where paper, metal, glass, and some plastic are separated and sent to factories to become new things. Food and yard scraps can become compost, rich dirt for plants. Fun fact: an aluminum can can be recycled again and again.
