Where do eggs come from?

Eggs come from mother birds, like hens. Hens lay eggs. People collect some eggs to eat. Eggs feel smooth and hard.

Most eggs we eat come from hens, which are mother chickens. A hen’s body makes an egg, then she lays it from under her tail. The hard shell keeps the soft inside safe, like a lunchbox keeps your snack safe. If a rooster has helped, a chick can grow. If not, it is just an egg to eat.

Eggs come from animals that lay them, especially hens when we mean breakfast eggs. Inside a hen, a yolk forms first. Then egg white, thin skins, and a hard shell are added around it before the hen lays it. If the egg was fertilized, meaning a rooster’s cell joined it, a chick can grow. Most store eggs are not fertilized. Fun fact: an eggshell has thousands of tiny holes, so air can slowly pass through.
